In an age dominated by digital noise, offline marketing and advertising continue to hold unique value. Success in marketing often stems from doing what others are not doing. In a world where nearly every business is chasing online clicks, using “old-fashioned” offline methods can actually help you stand out. In the world of marketing, being visible means to be different.
In this post, I am listing every trick in the book of offline advertising, most which I had big success throughout the years of working as an advertising manager. I invite you to re-explore those forgotten channels and see how they can work for your business.
-
1. Classified Ads
It’s great for lead generations. You should still have a strong benefit-driven headline and a clear call to action. Free reports work very well with classifieds.
-
2. Direct Mail
Almost forgotten nowadays but remains viable as ever especially with rising cost of online advertising. Nothing beats direct response when it comes to results-driven proven advertising. Messages sent directly to highly targeted prospects can deliver amazing return on investment (ROI) when tested properly.
-
3. Yellow Pages
A great resource that is often ignored or used ineffectively. They are great because when someone sees your ad, they are already in the market for your product or service.
-
4. Space Ads
A great way to get very low-cost space ads is to use what’s known as remnant, or standby advertising. The trick here is to distinguish yourself among the crowd. One company had their space ad featured upside-down. People think it’s a mistake and read it. Be creative.
-
5. Radio/TV/Infomercials
You will be surprised how inexpensive you can get these types of slots, especially if you use remnant advertising. The return on investment is still great.
-
6. Flyers
See where your audience lingers and design flyers that can resonate with them. Don’t be obstructive or too pushy. If it can be relevant, people will not hate you and will generate a lot of business from it.
-
7. Networking
Chamber of Commerce, trade shows, seminars, are just a few examples. It’s usually more effective to try to capture contacts and leads than to try to close a sale on the spot.
-
8. Telemarketing
Works best for business-to-business selling. It remains a viable marketing method when used effectively. Also, think existing customers not just new prospects.
-
9. Trade Show Booths
A great place to capture leads. Try free reports or gifts. Create benefit-driven materials. Remember that your prospects are thinking: “What’s in it for me?”
-
10. Blimps, Banners, and Billboards
If it’s zoned for advertising and it’s blank, you have an opportunity.
-
11. Card Decks
These stacks of index cards are mailed to targeted audiences. Each deck can contain anywhere from 50 to 200 cards or so, each with an advertisement or coupon. Since your ad is mixed in with tons of others, it’s especially important to have a great headline and layout that will stand out from the clutter.
-
12. Value-Paks
Similar to card decks, “value-paks” are little booklets with multiple ads. They are mostly used with coupons, rather than business reply cards.
-
13. Vehicle Wraps
Turn your car, van, or truck into a moving billboard. This is a one-time cost that offers thousands of impressions per day if you drive frequently in high-traffic areas.
-
14. Door Hangers
Perfect for targeting specific neighborhoods. Door hangers are hard to ignore and can be personalized with coupons or time-sensitive offers.
-
15. Ad Magazines / Newspapers
They still work today. Magazines that are little more than a collection of space ads. Utilize direct response ads to stand among the crowd.
-
16. Catalogues
Printed catalogs still have strong appeal in niche industries. They allow customers to browse your entire product line and can work well with older demographics who prefer physical formats.
-
17. Gift Certificates
Research shows that people spend more than the gift certificate amount even if it is not conditioned. You don't have to set a minimum spending amount. A good variation on this formula is the free birthday dinner. Generally, nobody is going to come in on their birthday and eat their free dinner by themselves. They’re going to bring friends, relatives—you get the idea.
-
18. Coupons
Like gift certificates, coupons are also a great way to “touch” your customers and bring them back into your store.
-
19. Contests
Contests are a great way to get leads and generate business. Here’s a tip: always include an unadvertised “second place” that everyone who didn’t win will get. You can get as creative as you want to be with this one.
-
20. Word of Mouth / Viral Marketing
I once went to a hospital for my wife's doctor appointment, and discovered that they were offering free beverages for every patient or visitor. I'm not talking about those cheap machine-made coffee cups—it was Starbucks quality. It was unique and unexpected. I made sure to inform all of my friends about this enjoyable experience. Now of course this works well for a high-ticket service but surely can be scaled for any business with similar results.
-
21. Loyalty Programs
Put the endowment effect into your benefit. Coffee shops do this so well with their punch cards. When you complete your punch card, you get free coffee.
-
22. Sponsorships
Sponsoring local events, teams, or venues is a great way to gain visibility and goodwill. Make sure your brand is front and center on banners, programs, and giveaways.
-
23. Pre-paid Services
The idea is to offer a bundle of services or products that would cost far more if purchased separately over time than if purchased pre-paid up front.
-
24. Novelty Items
Distribute free items like USBs, fridge magnets, t-shirts, hats, coffee mugs, pens and pencils, mouse pads, etc. The trick is to have a compelling benefit-driven clever message or slogan.
-
25. Positioning
Distinguish yourself in the market by positioning your products or services from a different angle than your competitors.
-
26. Data-Based Marketing
Special offers sent on birthdays, wedding anniversaries, etc. These can work wonders.
-
27. Joint Ventures
They are great ways to lure new leads and customers. By partnering with other businesses whose customers are part of your market, you have an additional profit center of incremental income.
-
28. Endorsements
Offer to endorse an event, personality, or cause that aligns with your brand. Alternatively, gain endorsements from trusted figures or authorities in your market to build trust and credibility.
